Community comes together to support friends and families in recovery at HOPE Sheds Light’s 2nd Annual Family Barbecue

The barbecue was part of the nonprofit’s Recovery Speaks… Embracing the Journey series to help celebrate recovery and reduce the stigma surrounding substance use disorder.

Toms River, NJ – When words of experience, strength and hope unite, anything is possible. No one knows that better than HOPE Sheds Light, a family-focused non-profit organization that offers education, resources, support and hope to anyone impacted by substance use disorder. The nonprofit recently hosted its 2nd Annual Family Barbecue on June 18 at its headquarters in Toms River. Among those in attendance were state and local officials, community members and individuals in recovery alongside their families. The day’s message was strong – regardless of where you’re at in life, recovery is possible and HOPE Sheds Light promises to be there for the journey.

The event was part of the Recovery Speaks… Embracing the Journey series and was held in conjunction with the nonprofit’s 4th Annual Butterfly Garden Opening. The Family Barbecue featured a variety of activities such as arts and crafts, face painting, community vendors, Bubba’s BBQ, ice cream, games and more.

“This day was a testimony to HOPE Sheds Light’s impact on the community,” said Pamela Capaci, CEO of HOPE Sheds Light. “Four years ago, only a handful of individuals attended our garden opening and we had only 10 vendors. This year, we had 24 vendors and over 90 attendees. It is safe to say that this family barbecue and garden opening has become a permanent event on Ocean County’s community calendar.”

Looking to the future, HSL will host its 9th Annual Celebration of HOPE Walk on September 10, 2022 on the Hiering Avenue Beach in Seaside Heights. Please check HOPEShedsLight.org to register.
